McDonald’s is celebrating 30 years since the world’s first McCafé opened in Australia by serving up free coffee for Townsville locals at Strand Park on Tuesday, 6 June from 5.30am – 2.00pm.
This is the final stop on the McCafé coffee van tour, which is traveling the east coast to celebrate McCafé’s anniversary with Aussie customers.
Over the past 30 years, McCafé has become an Aussie success story and global phenomenon, with 1,026 McCafé’s across Australia and more than 4,000 in 60 countries across the word.
Today, it serves up more than 230 million cups of barista-made coffee and hot drinks in a year, with one in every four coffees sold in Australia from a McCafé.
Lancy Huynh, Group Brand Manager for McDonald’s Australia said: “We are excited to hit the road and celebrate McCafé’s 30th anniversary with the coffee lovers that helped shape it – our customers right here in Australia.
“Over the next few weeks, the McCafé coffee van will give away free coffee in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Townsville to thank our customers for their loyalty and support over the last 30 years.
“We look forward to meeting our customers across the east coast and fuelling them up with our great quality, barista-made coffee.”
Over the past 30 years, McCafé has evolved its approach to coffee to keep up with ever-changing customer preferences and habits, continuing to push the boundaries and help define great-quality coffee.
From May into the month of June, customers will be given lots of reasons to celebrate 30 years of McCafé with the launch of new products and giveaways for Aussie customers.
Last week, McCafé kickstarted its birthday celebrations with the introduction of the limited-edition Birthday Cake flavoured Latte, available for a limited time only. Served hot or cold, the new coffee features McCafé’s signature smooth and rich blend combined with delicious cake flavours.

About McCafé
McCafé is one of the largest coffee retailers in the country: one in every four coffees sold every day in Australia is from a McCafé. It’s one of our biggest local and global success stories, having first launched in Melbourne in 1993. In 2003 there were 100 McCafés around Australia. Now, there are more than 4,000 in 60 countries across the world and McCafe is worth billions to the global business. In 2021, McDonald’s debuted an exclusive new McCafé blend, roasted in Melbourne. The McCafé blend is sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms across Brazil, Honduras, Kenya and Ethiopia.
